Foil Drive Podcast | Ep 17 | Summer Kite Festival

Foil Drive made waves at the Summer Kite Festival in Poland, showcasing its electric foil assistance system across varied conditions and audiences. Here's a look at how this transformative tech is pushing the boundaries of foiling in Europe and what’s next for Foil Drive enthusiasts. The event was held in a quaint Polish town along a picturesque coastline, a prime spot for water sports with clean waters, steady winds, and beautiful weather. The setup allowed Foil Drive to demonstrate the flexibility of its system in real-world scenarios, from racing to recreational use. Dominic, who heads Foil Drive Europe, noted that while some participants were initially sceptical, they soon realised Foil Drive’s full capabilities. Once people hit the water, there was a noticeable “click moment,” where the light, power, and fun factor of Foil Drive became immediately apparent. Foil Drive Europe: New Developments for a Growing Audience Foil Drive Europe, a budding team of three, has ambitious plans for the region. While products are currently shipped from Australia, a significant shift is coming in October 2024, when Foil Drive Europe will handle its own stock and distribution. This change means faster shipping, reduced taxes, and a generally smoother process for European customers. The primary role of the Foil Drive Europe team is to increase awareness and accessibility. Over the past year, Dominic has tirelessly travelled to foil and surf destinations, organising demos and introducing riders to the thrill of using Foil Drive. Each country presents unique challenges and user demands—from wing foiling and pump foiling in Germany to downwinding along coastal Europe—and Foil Drive is proving versatile enough to meet these diverse needs. A Foiling Revelation for Newbies and Pros Alike The Polish audience was diverse, with both complete beginners and experienced foilers giving Foil Drive a try. It’s not just the capabilities of the Foil Drive that impressed but the simplicity with which it opened up foiling for new users. Beginners, who might typically struggle with the steep learning curve of foiling, found themselves on foil faster and with far less frustration. For seasoned surfers and wing foilers, Foil Drive offered a lightweight, reliable solution for flat water, pumping, and even downwind sessions. This blend of utility for both beginners and advanced riders reinforces Foil Drive’s position as more than just an “eFoil alternative.” It’s a system tailored to add value across a spectrum of use cases. Tailoring Gear to Maximise Performance One of the frequently asked questions at the event was about the best gear setup for Foil Drive. The system's adaptability across various front wings allows riders to choose high-aspect wings for calm conditions and small, manoeuvrable wings for bumpier days. Dominic shared that mid-length boards and foil-specific designs from major brands work particularly well with Foil Drive, offering enhanced glide and stability without excessive drag. Key tips for optimising performance included choosing boards with minimal rocker for easy takeoff, a feature that helps beginners avoid excessive energy burn when planning. Likewise, high-aspect foils work well with Foil Drive, especially in European waters where light wind and flat-water sessions are common. Battery life is always a top query, especially for riders looking to maximise time on the water. As Dominic explained, battery life varies based on factors like rider weight, conditions, and skill level. Typically, an average rider (around 80 kg) can expect over an hour on a Power battery and close to 45 minutes on the Sport battery. The Power battery, which lasts longer, is ideal for all-day outings, while the lighter Slim model with a performance battery suits flat-water sessions and wake thieving. In Poland, the team enjoyed upwind and downwind runs of 600-800 meters, clocking in over two hours of foiling. Even as conditions changed, Foil Drive’s setup allowed for extended glides and uninterrupted fun, with minimal drag once up on foil. “Try Before You Buy” and European Expansion Plans Foil Drive is committed to letting prospective buyers experience the system first-hand. Through a growing network of European dealers, team riders, and ambassadors, Foil Drive demos are becoming increasingly available. Dominic noted that while not all ambassadors can provide demos due to equipment investment, many are eager to spread the word, often making their own gear available for testing. Upcoming Events and Product Launches Dominic is gearing up for the Association of Wind and Water Sports Industries (AWSI) event in Hood River, where the team will unveil new products, though the core Gen 2 system remains unchanged and future-proofed. Following AWSI, Foil Drive Europe has several informal downwind events lined up and a big showing planned for the prestigious Düsseldorf Boat Show in early 2025. The goal is clear: to make Foil Drive more accessible and expand its footprint across Europe. The Summer Kite Festival offered Polish enthusiasts an up-close look at how Foil Drive can redefine their foiling experience, from enabling flat-water pumping sessions to making challenging downwind rides more accessible. As Foil Drive Europe expands its presence and product range, the future of foiling in Europe looks brighter, faster, and more fun than ever. Keep an eye on Foil Drive’s social media channels for upcoming events, demos, and updates. Whether you’re a first-time foiler or a seasoned pro, there’s no substitute for trying it out yourself and experiencing that “click moment” on the water. Watch the full episode

Surf Etiquette with Foil Drive

Whilst Foil Drive might eliminate the difficulty of getting on foil, it certainly does not eliminate your obligation to follow surf etiquette. If anything, you will need to practice this more so than before. Remember technology advancements are not the problem, how it’s used can cause people to become upset.

Foil Drive Podcast | Ep 16 | Foil Drive Etiquette with Co-Founder Paul Martin

As the popularity of foil driving and foil assist technologies grow, it's essential for users to understand their responsibility and etiquette when sharing the water with others. In a recent podcast discussion, Paul Martin, the inventor of Foil Drive, shared his insights on how foil drivers can navigate this growing trend responsibly. The Role of Responsibility in Foil Drive Paul highlighted a key point: as pioneers of Foil Drive, there's an inherent responsibility to establish the right standards. Whether you’re the first to introduce a new sport or technology, the burden falls on the early adopters to create a respectful and harmonious environment for everyone. Paul emphasised that responsibility doesn’t necessarily mean strict rules, but rather fostering community-driven standards. This involves understanding your position in the water and being considerate of others. Sharing the Ocean: Do Foil Drivers Have Priority? One of the primary concerns addressed in the conversation is how foil drivers should interact with other ocean users. Paul pointed out that while technology may give foil drivers an advantage in terms of catching waves, it doesn't automatically grant them the right to overtake or inconvenience other surfers or swimmers. A sense of self-regulation is vital. Foil drivers should aim to catch waves without disrupting others and recognise that swimmers, like pedestrians at a crosswalk, should always have the right of way. The key takeaway here is that foil drivers must exercise common sense. If you're able to catch waves that others can’t, great. But that doesn’t mean you should dominate the lineup. Striking a balance between maximising your experience and allowing others to enjoy theirs is critical. Addressing Concerns: Noise Pollution and Group Etiquette Another issue raised was the noise generated by Foil Drive motors, particularly when used by less experienced riders. In a quiet beach environment, the sound of multiple Foil Drives can be off-putting, especially if the motors are constantly breaching the surface. Paul explained that this is often a result of users not fully understanding how to operate the motor efficiently. By keeping the pod submerged and using minimal throttle, riders can reduce noise and enjoy a smoother, quieter ride. Group dynamics also come into play, particularly when multiple foil drivers are in the water together. While it's undoubtedly fun to foil with friends, large groups can become a spectacle and may unintentionally disrupt the vibe of the beach or surf spot. The same way that snowboarders might carve down a hill together, foil drivers often want to show off their skills. However, it's essential to remember that this can be intimidating or annoying to other water users. Paul recommends spacing out and choosing less crowded spots to avoid these conflicts. Communication: The Key to Peaceful Coexistence One of the most valuable tips shared in the discussion was the importance of communication. A simple “hello” or a quick explanation to a surfer about how foil driving works can go a long way in easing tensions. Many surfers or swimmers may not fully understand what you're doing, which can lead to misunderstandings. By being approachable and offering to share the experience, such as giving someone a tow or explaining how the technology works, you can foster a sense of camaraderie rather than competition. Final Thoughts: Embrace the Responsibility At the end of the day, foil driving is a fun and exhilarating way to enjoy the water. But with that fun comes responsibility. As Paul aptly noted, technology evolves, and Foil Drive is just one step in the continuous development of water sports. It’s up to early adopters and regular users to lead by example, ensuring that foil driving can coexist peacefully with other ocean activities.  Whether you're a seasoned foil driver or a newcomer to the sport, remember to stay respectful, communicate clearly, and enjoy the waves responsibly. Foil Drive Podcast | Ep 15 | Foil Around Britain

In the world of water sports, innovation and adventure often go hand in hand. This is exactly what Steve Bowens and Simon Osborne set out to prove with their incredible journey around Great Britain on wing foils. Their expedition, aptly named **Foil Around Britain** (FAB), is an ambitious attempt to become the first individuals to wing foil around the island nation. This isn’t just about adventure though—Steve and Simon are raising money for **Cancer Research**, blending sport, personal challenge, and philanthropy into a single inspiring project. The Inspiration Behind FABIt all began when Simon and Steve, both avid wing foilers, realised the sport’s potential to cover vast distances. After completing a demanding crossing from the Isles of Scilly to Land’s End—a 22-nautical-mile challenge—they set their sights on something bigger. Inspired by previous endurance expeditions, including Simon’s 2002 kayak journey around the UK, the duo decided to take on the full perimeter of Britain on their wing foils. However, the idea came to life in a somewhat unconventional way—a post-adventure beer session in Cornwall! The challenge, initially dismissed as "a really stupid idea," eventually transformed into an inspiring reality. The Challenge of Circumnavigating BritainFoiling around Britain is no simple feat. The route covers over 3,500 miles, and the duo gave themselves a six-week window to complete the challenge. Navigating Britain’s coastlines presents unique difficulties: tricky headlands, shifting tides, and unpredictable wind conditions. As Steve and Simon quickly learned, coastal tides have a huge impact on their ability to foil, and the journey has required them to constantly adapt to changing conditions. One of the most significant early challenges came after they had completed the notoriously difficult passage around Land’s End. Wind conditions forced the pair to rethink their strategy—an anti-clockwise route around Britain became the better option. This flexibility, paired with their background in water sports and their experience with the ocean’s unpredictability, has been key to their success so far.The Role of Foil Drive in the ExpeditionA vital part of the duo's setup is their use of **Foil Drive**, an electric assist system that has proven indispensable throughout the trip. Originally intended as a safety backup, Foil Drive has played a far greater role than either Steve or Simon anticipated. It has allowed them to make significant progress even in light winds and navigate safely in and out of challenging coastal areas. "We couldn't do what we're doing without it," Steve admitted, emphasising the confidence it provides them in tough situations. The ability to cover extra distance, safely return to shore, and tackle estuaries with offshore winds has made Foil Drive a game-changer in this expedition. It has allowed the pair to focus on the adventure without compromising safety, highlighting just how vital it has become for their progress. The Highs and Lows of the JourneyAs with any expedition of this scale, Steve and Simon have encountered their fair share of highlights and challenges. One of the standout moments for Simon was wing foiling around Beachy Head, with its iconic white cliffs and red-and-white lighthouse standing tall in the background. "It felt pretty wild and cool," he recalled, describing the dramatic landscape lit by stormy skies and squally conditions. For Steve, a particular highlight was rounding Portland Bill, a notorious headland with rough tides. With no safety boat and 50 kilometres of exposed water, it was a true test of their skills and resilience. But beyond these milestone moments, both Steve and Simon have been struck by the kindness of strangers they've met along the way. From people offering accommodation to impromptu gear repairs, the support they've received has been a heartwarming reminder of the generosity that exists in communities across Britain.Safety and LogisticsSafety is a primary concern during any expedition of this nature, and Steve and Simon have been meticulous in their planning. They rely on **BB Talkin’**, a Bluetooth communication system, to stay in constant contact with each other while out on the water. They also carry a range of safety equipment, including VHF radios, personal locator beacons (PLBs), and flares, to ensure they can react quickly in case of emergencies. Regular communication with the Coast Guard adds an extra layer of precaution, with detailed daily briefings on their plans and progress.Despite their extensive preparations, unexpected challenges still arise. For example, the duo discovered they were venturing into active military firing zones, complete with low-flying aircraft. After a few close calls, they've become adept at checking in with control centres before entering these areas, ensuring they're clear to pass through safely.Looking AheadAs of the latest update, Steve and Simon are about halfway through their journey. They’ve completed over 1,200 kilometres and are currently making their way up the east coast, with Scotland firmly in their sights. With a combination of determination, support from Foil Drive, and a keen focus on safety, the pair continues to tackle each day as it comes. Though the winds, tides, and coastline present new challenges daily, the duo remains undeterred, eyeing their final goal while raising vital funds for Cancer Research along the way.Follow the JourneyTo keep up with Steve and Simon’s incredible expedition, be sure to follow their progress on Instagram and other social media channels. If you're inspired by their story, consider donating to their **Cancer Research** fundraiser—every contribution makes a difference. You can also track their journey in real-time via their website, where they provide updates on their location, progress, and challenges. As Steve and Simon continue to break new ground in the world of wing foiling, their journey is a testament to human endurance, passion for adventure, and the power of community. Learning to Pump a Foil | No Dock or Boat Required

In this Masterclass, Dom delves into the technique of flat water pump practice. One of the standout advantages of using Foil Drive is its versatility; you don't need a dock, ladder, or boat to start practicing flat water pump foiling. With Foil Drive, you can begin from virtually anywhere on the water and get up onto the foil effortlessly. We recommend watching this Masterclass to get the most out of it! Scroll to the bottom to watch. The process is straightforward. Start by performing an Ollie to get high on the mast, and then pump to your heart's content. Here are the four key stages of this technique: Flat Water Takeoff: For a detailed explanation, refer to Dom's Takeoff Technique video on taking off from a small print board. This video outlines the technique thoroughly. eFoiling in Assist Position: Position the motor high on the mast for better control. The Ollie: This manoeuvre helps you transition to pumping. Transitioning from Pumping Back to eFoiling: Mastering this transition is crucial for a seamless experience. This isn't focused on pump technique itself but rather on demonstrating the potential of Foil Drive to aid in practicing pumping. I'll show you how to transition from foiling to pumping and back again. Starting with the Ollie The Ollie is essentially a large pump. Crouch down by bending your knees, then jump up while applying significant back foot pressure. This back foot pressure is crucial for gaining height on the mast. At the peak of your jump, bring your knees up to your chest to prolong your time aloft before resuming pumping. When transitioning to foiling, remember to push down with your front foot to counteract the lift from the motor. Pitch Control in Assist Mode When the motor is high on the mast in the Assist motor position, maintaining pitch control is vital due to the short distance between the motor and the board. You'll need to keep the motor in the water without the board touching and creating drag. This technique improves with practice and significantly enhances your pitch control skills. Extending your run as much as possible and then smoothly transitioning back to foiling is a satisfying and practical aspect of using Foil Drive. Benefits of Foil Drive for Pumping Gaining fitness skill is another advantage to Foil Drive. You'll be on the foil for extended periods, alternating between pumping and foiling. Wake thieving is also simplified. You can easily transition from foiling to riding a wave and back again without falling off and paddling back. Foil Drive offers a versatile and efficient way to practice flat water pumping.  Happy foiling! If you want to learn more about Foil Drive, visit our help centre. Watch the full Masterclass

How To Improve Controller Signal Connectivity

The majority of "Connectivity Issues" can be improved by simply understanding how the controller and the electronics talk to each other. Paul takes you through different board constructions and volumes, and different techniques you can try to improve your connectivity. We recommend watching this Masterclass to get the most out of it! Scroll to the bottom to watch. The Importance of Board Selection In this Masterclass, Paul demonstrates take-off with a variety of boards, each with its own pros and cons. Choosing the right board is crucial as it directly affects the signal reception of your controller. Here’s a quick rundown of the boards we’ll be discussing: Foil Drive Inspired Axis: This board was designed to have excellent signal despite being full carbon, and has long plastic tracks. It's 60L,  5'4" x 19.5". Starboard Blue Carbon Series: A bit more challenging with signal but fantastic when used correctly. It's 5'2 x 50 litres. Unifoil Quiver Killer: Known for its versatility, this board is 5'2" x 19" and 45 litres, also carbon fibre with plastic tracks. Appletree: A smaller full carbon board at 4'6 and 35 litres, which can sink under body weight if not handled properly. Takuma Rising Sun: This 4'2 x 18.5" 30-litre board has full carbon tracks, making it previously challenging for signal but now usable with the Foil Drive external patch antenna. Understanding Board and Controller Interaction Not all carbon boards are created equal. The differences in carbon usage, box materials, and track materials can significantly affect signal reception. For instance, a carbon board with plastic tracks behaves differently from one with carbon tracks. Understanding these nuances helps in optimizing your setup for better performance. Practical Tips for Controller Use Controller Placement and Signal Maintenance When using a full carbon board like the Appletree, you need to pay attention to controller placement. Keep the Controller Close: Place the controller on the surface of the board to maintain a strong signal. This works both above and below the water. Avoid Mashing the Throttle: The controller needs to see the signal for at least one second to link. If you lose the link, stop, wait for a second, then pull the throttle again. Signal in Water: If the board is submerged, it’s crucial to bring the nose out of the water to regain the link. Paddle quickly to maintain the signal. Getting Up on Foil Body Position: Keep your body over the nose of the board to maintain it flat. This helps the wing build speed and generate lift. Throttle Management: Don’t go full throttle immediately. Gradually increase the throttle as you build speed. Engage the boost only once you're moving to avoid too much lift. Paddling Technique: Use a double overhand paddle to get a smaller board up on the plane. Ensure the board’s nose is out of the water before transitioning to paddling. Troubleshooting Common Issues Signal Loss: If you lose signal, it’s often because the controller is too far from the board. Press the controller against the surface of the board to re-establish the connection. Board Submersion: Fully submerged boards will lose the signal. Always try to get part of the board out of the water before throttling up. Throttle Control: Avoid keeping the throttle pressed when out of the water. Release it, wait for a second, then engage it again to prevent sudden take-offs. Advanced Tips Boost Engagement: Only engage the boost once you have sufficient speed to avoid abrupt lifts. Transitioning: When transitioning from speed to foil, subtle movements are key. Don’t make aggressive manoeuvres.  Conclusion Understanding and optimising the connection between your controller and board can significantly enhance your Foil Drive experience. By paying attention to the details of your equipment and practicing the techniques discussed, you can achieve smoother and more efficient rides. Happy foiling! Foil Drive Podcast | Ep 14 | The Blue Highway: Behind-the-Scenes

In the latest episode of our podcast, we had the pleasure of sitting down with the creative minds behind the short film The Blue Highway—Josh Ku, Matt Leong, and Slater Neborsky. This film, which beautifully captures the essence of foiling, takes viewers on a visual journey along a striking coastline. Throughout the discussion, the trio delved into the inspiration, challenges, and unique aspects of creating this cinematic experience. The Birth of an Idea The Blue Highway wasn't just another film for these creators; it was a passion project born out of a love for the ocean and the sport of foiling. Josh Ku opened the conversation by sharing how the idea came to life. He explained that the film was inspired by the dynamic and ever-changing relationship between a rider and the water. This connection, he says, is what makes foiling such a unique and exhilarating experience. Matt Leong echoed Josh's sentiments, emphasising the importance of showcasing the beauty of the locations they filmed at. The coastal scenery plays a significant role in the film, almost as a character itself, setting the tone and atmosphere for the entire piece. Matt mentioned that they wanted to capture the raw, untouched beauty of these places, making sure the audience could feel the same awe and reverence they felt while shooting. The Challenges of Filmmaking in Nature One of the key topics discussed was the logistical and environmental challenges faced during the production of The Blue Highway. Slater Neborsky offered insight into the difficulties of filming in remote coastal areas. The unpredictability of the weather, the timing of the tides, and the need to protect the delicate environments they were filming in all posed significant hurdles. The team also had to navigate the technical challenges of capturing the fluidity and speed of foiling on camera. Slater pointed out that while drones and other modern technology played a crucial role, they had to be creative and adaptive, often working with limited resources to get the perfect shot. The result, however, is a film that feels both intimate and expansive, drawing viewers into the heart of the experience. A Deep Connection to the Sport Beyond the technical aspects, what really stands out in this conversation is the deep connection each filmmaker has to foiling. Josh, Matt, and Slater aren't just creators; they’re passionate riders who understand the intricacies of the sport on a personal level. This connection is evident in every frame of The Blue Highway, where the joy and thrill of foiling are palpable. They also discussed how the film aims to reflect the community aspect of foiling. It’s not just about individual achievement but also about the shared experience of riding with friends, learning from each other, and exploring new waves together. This communal spirit is something that they hope resonates with audiences, whether they’re seasoned foilers or newcomers to the sport. Looking Ahead As the conversation wrapped up, the team hinted at future projects that will continue to explore the relationship between humans and the ocean. They’re excited about the possibilities of where their creative journey will take them next, always with the goal of pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in both the sport and its cinematic portrayal. The Blue Highway is more than just a short film; it’s a love letter to the sport of foiling and the incredible landscapes that make it possible. Through the eyes of Josh Ku, Matt Leong, and Slater Neborsky, we get a glimpse of the passion, dedication, and creativity that went into this project. Whether you’re a foiling enthusiast or simply a lover of stunning cinematography, this episode and the film it discusses are not to be missed. Watch the full episode

Transitioning from Motor to Free-Foil

Transitioning from motoring to gliding with Foil Drive on your foil board can be tricky, but with the right approach, it can be smooth and effortless. Here are some essential tips to help you perfect this transition and enhance your overall riding experience. Less is More One common mistake riders make is trying to do too much too fast. They often force the board up, which is unnecessary. Instead, you should focus on doing less. Build up your speed and lead in to a small pop-up. That's all it takes! Avoid an aggressive kick or pushing the board hard. With enough velocity and lift, simply get on one of the small bumps in the water, pop up then pop down. Don't Force It When you attempt a big kick or an aggressive manoeuvre, you risk unsettling the wing, the board, and yourself. This can lead to instability and a less enjoyable ride. It's all about maintaining control through subtle movements rather than forceful actions. Pre-Spooling Your Propeller When you’re in powered flight and your motor is out of the water, you have two main options: pre-engage the propeller out of the water and then drop it in, or start it in the water. Avoid starting the propeller when it's halfway in and halfway out of the water, as this can cause vibration issues. Here's how to do it right: Pre-spooling: As you're gliding, pre-spool your propeller and then drop the motor back in. This technique helps you transition back into forward momentum smoothly, maintaining your speed. Starting in the water: This approach tends to slow you down more as you hit the water hard and need to build up speed again. While it’s a viable option, it requires more effort to regain momentum. Handling Stalls If you find yourself slowing down to the point of stalling, it’s better to give up gracefully than to try overpowering the stall. Avoid slamming the throttle in an attempt to force your way out, as this can pinch the board and make recovery more difficult. It can also be dangerous, potentially causing you to fall onto the board. Instead, simply jump off and restart. This approach is safer and more effective. Conclusion Mastering the transition from motoring to gliding is all about subtlety and control. By doing less, pre-spooling your propeller, and knowing when to give up gracefully, you can ensure a smoother, safer, and more enjoyable Foildriving experience. Happy riding! Foil Drive Podcast | Ep 13 | M2O Film Behind the Scenes with Paul Cooper

Welcome to another episode of the Foil Drive Podcast! I'm thrilled to share this incredible experience from Paul Cooper's hometown in Hawaii, where we embarked on an unforgettable Foil Drive project. We achieved something unprecedented: traveling from Molokai to Oahu on our Foil Drive prone boards. This was the longest voyage ever attempted on a Foil Drive unit, and we’re here to debrief the journey, from preparation to the crossing itself, and how we felt afterward. The Beginning of an Epic Week The adventure began with a stroke of luck. Upon arrival, I caught the tail end of a period marked by weeks of poor conditions. The day I arrived was a bit onshore with some swell, but by the next day, the South Shore boasted waves well over six feet—an unusual sight. Despite the grey skies and persistent rain, we had a solid setup for our upcoming adventure. Paul and I kicked off the week by hitting a now-popular Foil Drive spot on Waikiki, known for its challenging swells that are unachievable by prone surfers. The unique feature of this spot is the massive lumps of swell that come from afar, making it difficult for prone surfers to sit in the right spot. With our Foil Drives, we effortlessly glided over these swells, reminiscent of backcountry snowboarding on huge, rolling hills. It was an exhilarating warm-up for what was to come. A Week of Perfect Conditions The conditions kept improving throughout the week, defying expectations. Initially, it seemed like the first day of surfing would be the peak, but every day saw bigger, cleaner, and more perfect waves. This exceptional run of swell was a rare treat. With the approaching crossing day, the winds shifted to ideal conditions—trade winds that were perfect for our journey. Preparing for the Crossing Despite being known for his Foil Drive skills, Paul admitted to his limited downwind experience. His time was primarily spent wing foiling, which consumed his focus and prevented him from diving deep into downwinding. However, he was determined to embrace the challenge. The key to success, he found, was in understanding and reading the bumps and being proficient in popping up on the Foil Drive. As the big day approached, our team came together. We had an incredible boat captain, a top-tier production crew, and seasoned watermen like Jacko and Kahi, making for a strong and supportive group. The Journey Across the Channel The crossing itself was beyond thrilling. The initial excitement had us all ripping turns and enjoying the ride. The channel, known for its gnarly conditions, presented a series of unique challenges. From navigating massive swells to dealing with intense currents, it felt like experiencing five different types of runs in one journey. Despite initial nerves, Paul and the team pushed through, relying on each other’s strengths and experiences. One remarkable aspect of the crossing was the varying conditions—one moment it felt like a skate park with peak-like wind bumps, the next it was a smoother ride closer to land. This diversity in conditions made the journey even more exhilarating. Overcoming Challenges and Embracing the Moment Throughout the crossing, there were moments of intense focus and physical strain. I remember overheating from the relentless sun and taking quick dips to cool off. Hydration and energy were crucial, and my camel pack with hydration mix and a last-minute energy gel proved to be lifesavers. Paul's preparation and pacing paid off, allowing him to complete the journey without major cramps or issues. One humorous moment involved the superstitious ban on bananas on boats, which I unknowingly broke. Despite the initial alarm from the crew, we had a smooth and successful crossing. A Personal Triumph Completing the crossing was a personal triumph for me, a testament to the power of the Foil Drive Assist in achieving what seemed impossible. The feeling of stepping off on Oahu, having done it in one shot, was indescribable. It was a journey marked by incredible teamwork, personal growth, and unforgettable experiences. Looking Ahead We captured some of the best foiling footage ever, and we can't wait to share it with the world. The film will be released around the time of the M2O races in July, showcasing our adventure and the incredible potential of the Foil Drive. Stay tuned for more updates and join us in celebrating this remarkable journey. Thank you for being part of the Foil Drive community, and we look forward to sharing more epic adventures with you soon! Watch the full episode

Foil Drive Podcast | Ep 12 | Eric Sterman

Eric Sterman, from the North Shore of Oahu, was our guest for episode 12 of the Foil Drive Podcast. Eric, known for his foiling skills and film expertise, shared his journey and stoke for the sport.Currently in El Salvador for a film project, Eric talked about how he got into foiling. It was during a filming trip in 2016 with Kilani and Robbie Nash that he first encountered the sport. This experience sparked a new passion for him, even though he had always been deeply involved in surfing.Eric described how surfing has always been a significant part of his life, but foiling brought a new level of excitement and community. Unlike surfing, which can often be competitive and individualistic, foiling is more inclusive and fosters a sense of camaraderie. He mentioned how foiling encourages sharing and collaboration, which is quite different from the usual surfing culture where everyone competes for the best waves. When asked about how foiling is received in his community on the North Shore, Eric said that there hasn't been much resistance. People generally understand where it's appropriate to foil, and there's a growing interest among locals. However, he did note that some surfers might find it challenging to transition to foiling due to the time and equipment investment required. One of the things Eric finds most appealing about foiling is the challenge it presents. He talked about the steep learning curve and how rewarding it is to overcome those initial struggles. Eric's journey into downwind foiling started with beach runs on prone boards, gradually progressing to more challenging downwind runs. Inspired by pioneers like Dave Kalama and Alex Aguera, Eric and his friend Aaron kept pushing themselves, motivated by the thrill of mastering this unique form of foiling. The podcast also covered the use of Foil Drive. Eric expressed his excitement about how Foil Drive's can make foiling more accessible, especially for those who might be hesitant to invest the time in learning traditional methods. By using Foil Drives, people can experience the joy of downwind foiling without the initial struggle. He sees Foil Drive as a tool to introduce more people to the sport, allowing them to enjoy the thrill of gliding over water without the steep learning curve.Eric shared some interesting ideas about how Foil Drive can be used to maximize time on the water. He envisions taking friends on downwind runs, giving them a taste of the adventure without the initial struggle. Additionally, Foil Drive's offer a practical way to make the most of conditions, whether it's catching waves or exploring new areas.Throughout the podcast, Eric's passion for foiling and the ocean was palpable. He encouraged others to embrace the challenges and rewards of the sport, highlighting the sense of community and fulfillment it brings. His enthusiasm was infectious, making me want to try foiling myself. In summary, this episode of the Foil Drive podcast with Eric Sterman was a fascinating look into his world of foiling. Eric's journey from traditional surfing to foiling showcases the evolution of an athlete embracing new challenges and passions. His story is a testament to the power of perseverance, community, and the endless possibilities the ocean offers. Whether you're a seasoned surfer or a curious beginner, Eric's insights and experiences provide a captivating glimpse into the world of foiling. Watch the full episode

For decades now, people have been crossing this 32 mile channel on various crafts, in effort to prove themselves and their ocean ability. With the modernization of the foil in 2018, it was only a matter of time before interisland racing in Hawaii leveled up. The foil has opened so many new and exciting opportunities to connect the Hawaiian Islands. A crossing that used to take 6 hours is now cut down to 2 hours on the foil. The invention of the Foil Drive has opened up an even broader scale for people to explore and get creative. Finding spots that haven't been surfed, seeking waves that are nearly impossible to get to by paddling, or even having an extra security of safety if you fall. All these things came to mind when I was brainstorming an idea to capture the magic of Foil Drive. However, crossing the Kaiwi channel on our prone surf foil boards was the one that stood out most. Moloka'i is a sacred place. The people, the beauty, and the culture are all so alive within the land. Each time a crossing takes place, gratitude is at the forefront. Having that gratitude of the people of the land, the ones who came before, and the ones who are paving the way for future generations to come. The morning of the crossing was as perfect as it could be. We drove our boats across the channel at dawn, in light wind - near glass conditions. This is rare for a typical morning to have wind but still be so calm on the water. Sure enough, as soon as we got to Moloka'i, the wind kicked in and the channel awakened. The ride across Kaiwi was just about as fun as you can imagine.Just you and your buddies laughing and riding together for 32 miles, pinching ourselves on how we all ended up here together. The highlight of the event was realizing how we are all connected. Connected by the ocean and this sport we all love to do. Mahalo Foil Drive for taking a chance on my team and I and I am so grateful to have brought my close friends and mentors along with me for the journey.___________________________________________ CREATORS PROFILESLearn more about our videographers, editors and photographers Description: Join us for the Main Premiere of Blue Highway at the Coconut Club in Honolulu! Foil Assist Surfing Tips

Foil surfing is an amazing sport that combines the thrill of surfing with the unique sensation of flying above the water. This masterclass provides essential tips and techniques to help you master foil surfing and Foil Drive, from preparing your gear to advanced manoeuvres. We recommend watching this Masterclass to get the most out of it! Scroll to the bottom to watch Preparing Your Gear Having the right equipment is crucial for a successful foil surfing experience. Here’s what you need to check before heading out: Board and Foil Selection We all want to rider smaller foils and smaller boards. We recommend going a foil size larger than you'd expect to give yourself the best change and progressing faster and nailing these techniques.  Foil Drive Gen2 If you're learning, a larger battery selection will help, if not, a backup on the beach! Pre-session Check: Ensure all bolts are tightened, tracks have foam in them, Foil Drive propeller bolts are secure, battery grease is applied, and the nose cone is latched properly.  Properly preparing your gear ensures a smooth and enjoyable session on the water. Getting Out to the Waves Navigating out to the surf can be challenging. Here’s how to do it effectively: Carry the Board: Hold the fuselage and one wing tip for better control. Angle the Board: Keep the board at a slight angle to help it pop over incoming waves. Throttle Activation: The controller MUST be OFF when getting in and out of the water. Do not turn the controller on until you are in deep water and are on the board.  Location Make sure you are NOT entering a busy line-up, with Foil Drive, you simply don't need to be near a line-up at all. Find somewhere isolated, away from the crowd.  These steps will help you reach the waves efficiently and safely. Taking Off Achieving a successful takeoff is essential for a good ride. Use the "J Turn" technique - Displayed in the video: Mimic Wave Catching: Pretend to catch a wave and then turn off at the last second in the shape of  a J  Wave Rush: Allow the wave to rush over your wing, providing extra lift. Propeller Re-Entry: When you need to engage the motor again, either start the motor spinning before re-entry, or wait until the propellers are fully submerged. Engaging with the propellers half in and half out can cause unbalanced strain on your bolts as the propellers open/close. This manoeuvre is particularly useful for heavier riders or those using smaller wings, helping you get on plane quickly. Riding the Waves To ride the waves effectively: Choose Smooth Sections: Avoid breaking waves, which can be too aggressive. Throttle Control: Engage the motor slightly before peeling off the wave for a smooth transition. Steady Throttle: Maintain the throttle at about 60-65% for a controlled and enjoyable ride. Focusing on these aspects ensures a smoother and more enjoyable foil surfing experience. Manoeuvring and Control Mastering foil surfing requires smooth and subtle movements: Avoid Aggressive Turns: They can disrupt balance and control. Gradual Speed Increase: Build speed gradually to maintain a steady ride. Absorb Wave Energy: Use your knees to stay balanced and prevent the board from aerating too much. These techniques help in maintaining control and stability. Safety and Courtesy Being mindful of others and ensuring safety is paramount: Avoid unnecessary Propeller Noise: Keep the propeller submerged to avoid noise and ensure safety. try not to motor along the surface with the propeller exiting and entering the water all the time. Gradual Peel Off: When peeling off from a wave, do it gradually to prevent aggressive impacts. Respecting these guidelines ensures a safer environment for everyone in the water. Advanced Techniques For those looking to advance their skills, here are some tips: Prone Takeoffs: Paddle with the controller in your hand, lean into the board, and apply full power before paddling. Throttle Adjustment: If predominantly prone surfing, reduce throttle to avoid overpowering the board. These advanced techniques help in refining your skills and improving overall performance. Final Tips Here are some final tips to keep in mind: Avoid Low Riding: Prevent dragging the pod by not riding too low. Be confident in your mast height and pop up that little bit higher! Maintain Throttle: Keep a slight throttle during turns to retain speed and control. Foil surfing is all about enjoying the ride and having fun.Take your time to feel your limits and ease into the sport. Every session is an opportunity to learn and improve. Stay safe, respect the ocean, and have a blast out there! Happy foiling! Watch the full Masterclass

Like a Bird - Foil Drive Review

We often receive reviews and recounts of how Foil Drive has changed peoples lives. That being as little as finally being able to get on foil, or unlocking the ability to share foiling with friends and family. Other times, people share their raw feelings of just how much Foil Drive has changed their life.  Curly is a Foildriver who sent through his story, wanting to share with the greater community. While this one wont help you perfect your technique or suggest how you should tweak your setup, it does serve is a great reminder of the joy the sport brings and just how lucky we are to, as Curly puts it, fly "Like a Bird". LIKE A BIRD by Curly, New Zealand I rose at dawn and walked down to the point with my gear. Out on the water the surface was oily calm with a sweet long period ground swell mounding up and running about 300m into the bay. The ocean was unusually clear and it was a privilege to be connected with nature on such a day. Using my electric foil drive propellor I motored easily into the clean swells then ollied up onto foil, bringing the motor out of the water so I could start foiling on wave power alone. Surf foiling lends itself to such smooth arcing turns, like snow boarding in powder, and I enjoyed the easy rhythm of trimming along the crest of the swell then leaning into a long drawn out cut back taking me out in front of the wave then using my amble speed to swoop back up and come off the top again, banking, gliding and diving, quiet and smooth, like a bird, like an albatross. Eventually I’m joined on the water by a surfer who I stop to chat with. “I saw you as I walked up the beach,“ he said. “I thought is it a surfer?  Na, too fast. And you seemed to be above the waves. Like a bird. Is it a bird?  Na, too big. To tell you the truth, I wasn’t sure what the hell I was looking at.” Later in the session we meet again on the inside and in the interests of interspecies relations I tow him back out to the point, connected with nature, connected with fellow surfers, no us and them (thanks Bones), just wave riders enjoying the ocean. Foiling is an auspicious intersection of technology and the natural world. I got into it via the hand held wind wing, which allows me to harness the power of the wind to explore the coast, hunt down swells and then use the wave power to glide and turn, weightless, free, happy. Eventually I decided I wanted a way to ride glassy waves on foil when there was no wind to tap into. The second generation of Foil Drive motor came to me like a gift from the universe, allowing me to catch almost any wave I chose, surf on a small nimble board, and ride without wing management to complicate the pure business of surfing a wave. It may have been a gift from the universe but it didn’t come for free. Think the cost of an e-bike and you will be in the ball park. At first I thought “hmmm, I dunno, this seems like a lot of money.” But only weeks later as I was riding wave after glorious wave on a 500m peeling right hand point break on the south coast of New Zealand, I was joined by three hectors dolphins who trimmed and leaped beside me, absolutely sharing the stoke, and all I could think was “this is the best purchase I ever made in my life.” Back on shore I crank up the diesel heater in my van. I cook up a feed of bacon and eggs and put on a brew of coffee. Both my Foil Drive batteries are charging  in the back of the van, and its feels like everything is as it should be in the world. I feel unbelievably sated and content. Tunes on the blue tooth speaker, dogs snoozing on the bed. I savour the feeling. Right now you could cut me off on the drive home, drop in on my wave, yell and scream abuse at me, and I would just smile and wave back, like a zen monk gorged on the serenity of the ocean and  the opportunities afforded by this exciting new phase in surf history.  I know depression, I know the darkness. I am grateful to have made it this far, to have glided above the surface of the ocean back into the light. If the great white takes me tomorrow I won’t be happy about it but I will be satisfied and appreciative with what I have experienced, with what is possible. I know freedom. I know what it is like to soar like a bird, hovering in a mystical zone some where between flight and surf, immersed In nature, the euphoria of connection with all that is beautiful in this world. I give thanks.

Foil Drive Podcast | EP 06 | BJ Barlin | Back Foiling Post Major Injury

Having come down to Adelaide, Australia, to meet the team and check out Foil Drive Gen2 first hand, we were moved by the story of one of our customers and how he came into Foil Driving with a Gen2 Kit. With BJ's story reminding Paul of why he first create what we now know as a foil assist, they both agreed it was a story to share, to inspire.Paul and BJ sit down and recount an incredible discussion they had on the water, one that brought these two grown men to tears while out foiling. With BJ keen to inspire others, the two sat down and recorded the story to share. Throughout the conversation, BJ shared his remarkable story of resilience through a major accident that left him not only in a wheelchair for months, but off his motorbikes and out of the surf for good... That's all until he found Foil Drive.  As the conversation unfolded, BJ recounted his initiation into the world of Foil Driving and foiling. BJ shared his struggles with conventional foiling techniques and highlighted the crucial role that the Foil Drive Assist Kit played in his learning process. Little did they know that his journey would take a challenging turn when a motocross accident left him with a broken femur and life-threatening injuries, seemingly jeopardising his life long connection with motocross, surfing and now foiling. BJ described the aftermath of the accident, waking up to the realisation that his foot was touching his head. The severity of his injuries, including a fractured femur in four places, raised concerns about potential leg loss. The recovery journey was arduous, and doctors cautioned against participating in impact sports, leaving BJ with the belief that he may never foil again. Amidst the setbacks, the conversation turns with the discovery of hydrid foiling, something that has since reshape the opportunities and significantly reduced the limitations of his injuries. The Gen2 Foil Drive emerged as a game changer for BJ. This technology not only reignited his passion for foiling but also offered a viable solution for individuals facing mobility challenges. Paul recounts the origins of Foil Drive, reflecting on his desire to create a tool, that would allow an older shoulder injury to seemingly disappear when out in the surf. The electric assist capabilities and user-friendly design of the Gen2 not only helped BJ overcome physical limitations but also provided a renewed sense of joy and accomplishment.  BJ's journey with the Gen2 challenged his initial scepticism about assisted foiling. The technology not only facilitated his return to the water but also changed his perspective, acknowledging its potential to open doors for others facing similar challenges. What was once perceived as a hurdle became a powerful tool for exercise, reshaping conventional views on adaptive sports like Foil Driving. BJ Barlin's remarkable journey, as shared in the podcast interview with Paul, serves as an inspiration to all who’re looking at assisted foiling as a means to keep doing what they love. His resilience and the power of the Gen2 highlight the boundless possibilities that Foil Drive and hydrid foiling brings to the world of water sports. As we continue to witness advancements in innovation, BJ's story reinforces the belief that technology has the capacity to break barriers and make recreation accessible to everyone. We hope you take the time to listen to this one, a story that frames the true potential and core values of Foildriving.  LISTEN BELOW OR SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVOURITE PODCAST PLATFORM! August Newsletter 2022

Didn't catch our Monthly email update from August? No worries, find all the info here! Welcome to the August edition of Monthly Updates! We've had a busy month welcoming a stack of new stockists and adding a range of masts to our compatibility list. MEET THE FOIL DRIVE TEAM With our whole team finally together for the first time, we took the opportunity to take some team photos so that you can put a face to a name! Keep an eye out for a new blog next month introducing everyone in our Foil Drive family and the role they play in keeping you on the water! NEW MAST COMPATIBILITY Last month we had a stack of new pods released, and this month is no different! There's a few pods in the list below we released last month but are now available online and an important one for Armstrong and Axis Power Carbon riders! Due to the tapered mast, we have released a specific flatwater or efoil motor pod for both the Armstrong A+ and Axis Power Carbon masts, you'll also notice a name change from Armstrong V2 to Armstrong A+ to better reflect the brands naming. Check it out: #46 Cabrinha Fusion Carbon - Test fitted on 80cm mast #47 Cabrinha Fusion Carbon Efoil #48 Naish S27 Carbon #49 Severne #50 Cloud 9 - Alloy #51 AK Durable Supply Co - Plasma - Carbon #52 AK Durable Supply Co - Trek - Alloy #53 Armstrong A+ - Efoil #54 Mikeslab #55 Axis Power Carbon Efoil STOCKIST HIGHLIGHT - WSS BOARDS This month we'd like to introduce you to WSS Boards! Sam and the team are based in North Manly in New South Wales, Australia, and have been with us since May 2022. We asked Sam a few questions about the shop: How long have you been involved in foiling and what do you love about the sport? Not too sure of the timeframe but as soon as we dabbled with it back when Rush Randle and co were pushing forward with converted airchair setups on windsurfers. Super niche back then but slowly through development we got out windsurfing and SUP foiling on SUPs. The evolution and progress is what i find exciting right now. Literally something for all tastes on foils these days. For me right now it's winging and SUP Downwind Foil that floats my boat What is the main use for Foil Drive in your area? Locally we've seen the Foil Drive take many roles. Initially getting people foiling who might have normally struggled to foil but more lately we seeing used as an entry to downwind foiling. This side of foiling is pretty tough but very rewarding and the Foil Drive is making a great steeping stone to foil downwind. What can people expect to find instore? We are a multi sport water store with big ranges of kit in all sports. Windsurf, SUP, Wing, Kite and literally everything on a foil. Proud to say our staff are still mad for all of them and love getting beginners set on their journeys. One piece of advice for new foilers or people wanting to learn to foil. My biggest tip to newcomers to foiling is be patient and resilient. This will be the most fun you'll have on the water but it won't happen over night. You can also support WSS here: Facebook Instagram NEW STOCKISTS We are stoked to introduce you two four new stockists jumping on board with Foil Drive. Our team works really hard selecting quality stockists who care both about their customers, the gear, and love the sport! Check them out, pop in and say hello and have a chat about all your Foil Driving needs! Didn't catch our Monthly email update from July? No worries, find all the info here! Welcome to the July edition of Monthly Updates! We've got some new blogs for you, a limited edition merch release and another stockist highlight from the crew in the UK. NEW MAST COMPATIBILITY With summer finally here for most of the world (not us unfortunately!), we have seen a stack of new masts released from a range of brands. We now have almost 50 masts in our range, the latest additions being: #37Starboard V8 Alloy #42 Slingshot Phantasm Carbon V1.1 #43 Neil Pryde Glide Wing Alloy 2021 #44 Liquid Force Alloy #45 Liquid Force Carbon The following will be available online in the coming days: #46 Cabrinha Fusion Carbon - (test fitted on 80cm mast) #47 Cabrinha Fusion Carbon Efoil #48 Naish S27 Carbon Note: Due to the unique design of the Cabrinha mast, we will be releasing two pods, for flatwater efoiling and assist purposes (see image below). This means if you want to surf, and flatwater foil with your Cabrinha mast, you will need both motor pods. Please watch this video before ordering a Cabrinha Fusion Carbon Motor Pod: Cabrinha Motor Pod Fitment. Special thanks to Anton for lending us your mast. NEW Foil Drive™ Merch We know most of you are in the middle of summer... We Aussies however, are in the middle of winter! We have just received our Limited Edition Foil Drive Hoodies and Crews! Whether you're soaking up the sun over in the US, or layering up with wetties here in Aus, we recommend grabbing some gear asap as stock is limited! We have also re-stocked on Hats and T-Shirts. The shirts are the same design but are now made of a higher quality, Organic Cotton and range from XS to 2XL. STOCKIST HIGHLIGHT - Foil Surf UK This month we'd like to introduce you to Foil Surf UK - also known as The SUP Hut! Matt and the team are based in Swansea, UK, and have been with us since July 2021. We asked Matt a few questions about the shop: The SUP HUT is one of the longest standing SUP specific stores in the United Kingdom. The original SUP company servicing the needs of stand up paddle boarders since 2008. We have also been taken hostage by the phenomenon of wind wing, and hydrofoiling... hence the birth of Foilsurf UK in 2017. Our shop in Swansea, South Wales, is on the doorstep to the Gower Peninsula offering lessons or hire of equipment giving you the option to paddle/wing or foil on what brands we stock. The foiling options on Gower are abundant, stunning scenery to pair with riding wind or waves! We have access to some great downwind SUP foil routes, wind wing and surf foil locations. Having the opportunity to test the Foil Drive will open up so much more potential in the locations you ride and in your own ability. So we urge you to come and visit our store... where the froth is frequently foiling. Stocking - Takuma, Go Foil, Axis, Fanatic & Naish Foils Boards - Sunova , Suns, Starboard, Fanatic, Kalama , Axis & Takuma. E-foils - Foil Drive, Takuma How long have you been involved in foiling and what do you love about the sport? First bitten in 2017 when that clip of KL (Kai Lenny) went viral (view here)... then I eventually found a foil Takuma Concept v100 and my journey started. I have always been open minded by the water sports I've adopted through the years , but when foiling turned up it blew my mind and still continues to more than any other. What is the main use for Foil Drive in your area? When the Assist PLUS arrived the UK, crew adopted into the Assist PLUS model as it gives options for efoiling. The downwind scene is a niche market currently but there is plenty of variety in the use of a foil drive Assist and Assist PLUS. What can people expect to find instore? The shop is only so big , we would love to be 100% committed to foiling , but we have to offer variety to our customers so STAND UP PADDLE is a great entry into water sports winging and foiling are more accessible than kitesurfing in our opinion. So we tend to cover those 3 sports - SUP - WING - FOIL. We have big inventory of foiling stock having been one of the first stores to commit to it. One piece of advice for new foilers or people wanting to learn to foil. You need to be committed to it and have time and headspace. It's fine having other sports... but to truly be immersed in a sport like foiling you need 100% focus, even if that means not using surfboards, SUP's etc. To learn the ways of the foil, something amazing happens - I suppose a bit like a spiritual transition, once you're in there in no going back . The froth is strong!! You can also support Foil Surf UK here: Facebook Instagram NEW BLOG POSTS We've had some really useful and important blogs go live this month regarding batteries and travel. Check them out here: Airline Travel & The Small Battery Parallel Y Lead Foil Drive Battery Comparison This month's photo below is from Arnaud on Reunion Island! Photo thanks to Yves Jacquemin. You can check out the full list of compatibility here - Starboard, Fanatic 2022, Neil Pryde, Liquid Force and the new Axis masts amongst some of the newbies! Earlier in the month, we posted a poll in the Facebook Foil Drive Owners Group to gauge interest on two accessories we use in our warehouse. One of which in now available on our store, the Foil Drive Battery Checker. Thanks to popular demand, the Battery Checker is available as a simple, compact device to check your battery percentages. Take it with you (Not in the water!) to check which of your batteries has the most charge, or use it at home to see if you've reached storage level without having to run down to your shed to plug it into your kit. STOCKIST HIGHLIGHT - HI-TECH SURF SPORTS - HAWAII We now have 19 Stockists scattered across the globe, each of which we work closely with to provide the best service possible to our Foil Drive community. Each month, we'll be featuring one of our stockists and allowing them to provide some insight into their store and their roots! First up is Hi-Tech Surf Sports in Hawaii. Giampaolo and the team at Hi-Tech have been with us since September 2021, just a few months after our first release, and he's taken the time to give you the rundown: I moved to Maui from Italy in 2001. I first taught water sports (mostly windsurfing and surfing) and in 2009 I started working for Hi-Tech, the biggest surf shop on the island, located in Kahului. We also have locations in Kihei, Paia and now Kaanapali, but it's the Kahului shop where you can find the foil gear, including the Foil Drive. When Alex Aguera came out with the first GoFoil SUP Foils (around 5 years ago, I think), I immediately jumped on them and struggled like everyone else. Unfortunately, there was no Foil Drive at that moment, but I was lucky enough that the first SUP board I converted to foiling, by installing a Tuttle Box, had a windsurfing mast track that I previously had installed for sailing on waves in very light wind days (A Starboard 7.4 POD). That's how I actually learned how to foil, as windsurf foiling offered me a lot more time on the foil than SUP foiling. I remember I was pretty much by myself at Kahului Harbour (Occasionally Ken Winner would show up to test some foils too). If you go now, there's tons of beginner wingers instead. So when the Foil Drive came out, I was already an advanced foiler and had done something like 30 attempts at SUP foiling downwinders. At the time I was using a massive foil like the GoFoil GL220 and with it I could occasionally take off, but it was so slow that I wasn't getting anywhere. When last summer I first saw a Foil Drive in action (Mark Ribkoff on the Gorge), I immediately wanted to get one on order to facilitate the take off. That's when I contacted the team and started buying units for the shop. It was an immediate success, and not only I could take off at ease at any time, but I could also use a much smaller foil and board, so that once flying, it was easier (and more fun!) to follow and ride the bumps. Things got even better lately thanks to the PLUS and its lighter batteries. I'm now at the point that I do Foil Drive assisted SUP foiling downwinders with a 725sqcm front foil, which is something I would have never been able to take off without the assist, not even with a proper SUP foiling downwind board. I was also able to go down in board size as I'm now riding my 5.0x90L Wingboard. To summarize, the Foil Drive allowed me to completely bypass the issue of taking off in a downwinders and focus on the performance aspect of the riding. Image thanks to Tomoko - Maui Tomo Snap Shots You can also support Giampaolo and Hi-Tech here: Facebook Instagram Youtube NEW BLOG POSTS You've more than likely already seen these pop up in your emails, but in case you missed it... May Update 2022

Didn't catch our Monthly email update from May? No worries, find all the info here! We'd like to introduce the first of many, monthly Foil Drive updates! We're going to take a look back on the month that's been and fill you in on what we've been up to, any new products, blogs and exciting content, as well as some tips and tricks! May has been a huge month for us here at Foil Drive HQ and in the water around the world, let's jump in! ALL Assist PLUS Pre-Orders have shipped (As of end of May 2022)! We can now happily say all pre-orders for the Assist PLUS are out the door! We thank all pre-order customers for their understanding and patience waiting for their new gear and we're stoked to see you all heading out across the globe! Find the current lead time for shipping on our home page. SHIPPING AND MATERIAL DELAYS Some of our key components were caught up in the nightmare of the global semiconductor chip shortages, manufacturing lockdowns, and closed or majorly delayed port/shipping operations, resulting in some components taking more than 4 months longer to arrive than anticipated. Moving forward, the team has spent considerable time, effort, and a heap of capital to ensure smoother supply of critical materials and components. Foil Drive Aussie East Coast Demo Early May saw Caitlyn, Ben and Paul hit the beaches of Sydney and Newcastle on the East Coast of Australia to meet up with some of the Foil Drive Crew over there. We also took the time to catch up with our awesome stockists in the area, WSS Boards in Manly and Kite and SUP in Warners Bay. We'll be diving into each of our stockists in the coming months. This was a very insightful trip for us all in running some demos and getting out with existing owners and seeing how they use their kits for their conditions. Massive thanks to everyone who came out and meet us to shared the stoke of Foil Drive!   THE TEAM EXPANDS Did you know we have a Foil Drive Owners Group on Facebook? This month has been busy over there with regular characters like Giampaolo and Dominic pushing the limits of gear selection and heaps of new crew finding their wings with the power of Foil Drive - be sure to check it out! The crew also share some epic videos and photos, we select a new shot each month for the group cover photo so be sure to share your snaps! This months photo below is from John in NSW - Riding a Sunova Casey board and Armstrong foil. That's a wrap for May! From everyone here at HQ, we want to thank you for your ongoing support. Foiling Etiquette with Foil Drive

Foiling Etiquette with Foil Drive

Surf Etiquette has been respected and acknowledged for many years and is incredibly important. As hydrofoiling continues to grow across the world, this etiquette is evolving to include guidelines for both traditional hydrofoils and efoils like Foil Drive™.There is already so much discussion around foils, where they fit and the overall safety in the line up. With good practice and strong role modelling, we're all in a position to educate our peers and display etiquette, to ensure life long enjoyment and growth of such an incredible sport. As a company producing these devices, we have the responsibility to aid our community with the right tools to not only enjoy their time safely, but to be considerate of others, their environment and their gear. Like any sport, rules and etiquette are constantly developing, so please add anything we may miss in the comments below! BASIC WATERMAN ETIQUETTE Let's start off with the basics, some things to consider for surfers and foilers alike.1. When you're learning, stay away from others2. ALWAYS wear a leg rope. We'll cover the only circumstance when we recommend not to in the Learners Etiquette below.3. Right of Way - The person closest to the peak of the wave always gets priority.4. Don't Drop In - If someone is going for a wave, or already on it, don't drop in, there will be another!5. Don't Snake - Snaking is when someone paddles inside of another surfer in order to steal priority and take off closest to the peak.6. Paddle back on the outside - Always paddle back to the line-up of the outside, don't cruise back through the guys where people are surfing.7. Communicate - Have a chat, encourage and apologise if necessary! Everyone's out there to have fun!8. Keep it clean - NEVER litter, it's as simple as that. To take it further, if you see some rubbish, it takes two seconds to pick it up! If we all do our part imagine what a change we can make! FOIL DRIVE™ LEARNERS ETIQUETTE Learning to foil is challenging and can be pretty messy (Legs, arms and foils go flying!) For more tips and tricks on Learning to Foil check out Caitlyn's Blog Here1. Wear a life jacket/impact vest and consider a helmet - Foils can be unpredictable and you will fall off. You'll need to learn how to avoid your own gear and fall safely.2. Take a friend or purchase a lesson - It's all well and good to head out by yourself and give it a go but for the safety of yourself and those around you, we suggest finding someone who can give some pointers. There are so many foiling schools around now so be sure to educate yourself first!3. Start on small rollers away from everyone else - the less obstacles the more successful you'll be and less risk of injuring someone.4. Leg ropes - The only time we recommend NOT using a leg rope is your very first session. With no one else around and no risk of your gear hitting someone when you fall, your safety is next. The first few times you fall, you'll want your board and foil to head the opposite direction. As soon as you work out how to fall safely, pop that leggie back on!5. Be aware of your surroundings, including the tide - scout your area first, if you have quite a low tide, head out at high tide to minimise the risk of hitting the ground. Also be aware of any submerged banks and features (rocks, branches etc.)GENERAL ETIQUETTE1. Read the Manual - It's there for a reason and it's your responsibility to fully understand your product and how it works BEFORE heading out for the first time. With features like Cruise Control, you'll need to know how to turn it on and off to avoid unnecessary events.2. Don't be a hog - One of the big selling points is that you can catch any wave you want and boost around in half the time. If there are others around, be mindful of the line-up, don't drop in, and wait your turn!3. Use the power of the Foil Drive™ to your advantage and catch waves further out where other surfers can't OR go further left or right down the line and catch more rounded waves that again other surfers can catch. Again with the added power of the Foil Drive™ there is NO need for you to take off in the pocket where other surfers tend to congregate. 4. Choose to Foil other waves and breaks that are completely empty or unused swell lines that, unless you have a Foil Drive™, are considered not rideable. We have many breaks like this here in our home state and often they can be a lot of fun, especially without the competition.5.When it's busy, leave the bigger sets for those who need them to catch waves and spend more time riding the less peaky waves that others often can't make use of.Because we have a motor we really need to give priority (give way) to anyone who is physically paddling (Sup, prone, body boarders etc), busy surf breaks are best left to surfers. This rule applies in so many other places.. a car gives way to a horse, a power boat gives way to a sail boat, ebikes give way to pedal power, Foil Drivers give way to paddlers... At the end of the day technology is NOT the problem it's how it's used and by whom that makes all the difference. Not everyone is going to agree with you but lets lay down the foundations for a respected sport for years to come!

Learning to Foil | A Beginners Guide

You may have seen my name getting around the place here at Foil Drive™ but I'm generally working away in the background! My name's Caitlyn and I'm the Brand Manager, in charge of all things graphics and media. I'll start off with some background info about how I ended up here and get started on my journey learning to Foil! This isn't intended to be a "How to Foil", we're always learning so I don't have all the answers and I probably could have tackled my journey a little different, but I hope I can offer some insight to make your journey learning to foil a little easier. I started with the boys (Ben and Paul) at Foil Drive back in September 2021. To start off with I was a ring-in, if you haven't connected the dots, I'm Ben's partner and, having a Graphic Design background, was able to help out with branding. I grew up on the river in South Australia so am familiar with being behind a boat, but in a much different manner. I've always wanted to surf but up until recently, didn't have enough salt water in my blood to dive in! Fast forward a few years and you'll find me at the beach just about every day. Foil Drive™ took off and I found myself learning about this strange sport as the product developed. THE FIRST RIDE Having never stepped foot on a foil, I was handed the controller to a Foil Drive prototype and the biggest board I've ever seen and jumped into the calm waters of a local river on a Starboard Hyper Nut 8'0 133L SUP with an Axis 75cm 19mm Mast and Axis S Series 1020 Front Wing + 440 Tail and no paddle - I'm 75kgs for reference too. I'll say now looking back, what an interesting board selection and man... I'm stoked at how fast the options have progressed! I started off trying to get up on foil while kneeling and managed to nail zooming around on my knees and stayed this way for the next 2 sessions. With no surfing background at all, I think it was almost easier to understand at first as I had no built up muscle memory, or prior expectations a to how this thing might react in the water! If I were to be in that same position again, I'd recommend starting off on your knees, but only until you understand the power of the Foil Drive™ and work out where your weight needs to be. After a few short runs on your knees, jump straight to your feet. Being on my knees added a bit of security, not so far to fall, totally removed the need for side to side balance and in a way hindered my progression. Add a life jacket or impact vest to your set up and jump to your feet, the vest will make the fall a little softer, and if you happen to collide with a wing or mast, less likely to leave with bruises! I also recommend running your motor halfway, this means you can still get on foil, but won't be miles above the water when you do fall! Key points to take to your first session: - Talk to a local board shop and select gear that's not too big, but has enough volume to keep you above the water, this will make getting started 1000x easier! Look for something that has room to grow into, if you're anything like me... I was ready for a smaller board 2 sessions in! I'd suggest borrowing or hiring a board until you're comfortable on a particular size. You'll want a front wing with a fair amount of lift to get you going too. - Ditch the paddle! While a paddle can be super useful for SUP foiling later on. I found it was just another thing to focus on. Opt for the controller in your preferred hand, just don't forget the wrist floatie! - Invest in a Life Jacket or Impact Vest, I still wear mine as it adds a lot of padding to soften a fall, and protects you if you happen to hit the wings or mast. Some foilers choose to wear a helmet as well, this is totally up to you. - Start on your knees! But not for too long... Just get the hang of how reactive everything is then jump to your feet. You'll need to be towards the nose of the board and work on lifting your bum up and down off your heels to adjust your balance. - It's a SUP, but be careful with your footing. Every board will have a different balance point and you'll work this out as you go. Think Marvels Silver Surfer, you're going to want your back foot over or just forward of where the mast is. Your front foot needs to be further towards the front of the board. - Not sure which foot should be front or back? Stand with your feet together and get someone to push you gently in the middle of your back. Your body will naturally put your strongest foot forward and this foot will need to be at the back (Over the mast). Left foot forward is Regular - Right foot forward is Goofy. - A little speed (15% throttle ) will help your get your balance and footing right before taking off. Try standing both stationary and with some throttle, you'll see what I mean! - "Lean forward! More Speed!" If it doesn't feel right, listen to these words. You feel like you're going so fast and couldn't possibly have your feet further apart, but trust me... speed is your friend! If the front of the board is constantly lifting, you need to shuffle forward and lean more, trying sliding your back foot forward and move your body weight forwards by leaning from torso up! - Small throttle movements... Slowly build up and decrease speed. Think like a plane, you need a runway to get going, don't try boost straight onto foil! - Try not to slap down.. When the nose tries to rise up, natural instinct is to take off the throttle instantly. This will result in a mighty thud on the water & will fling you off & destroy your knees! Instead, slowly release the throttle, jump away from the board if you need to. - Consider a medium pod position on your mast. This allows enough room to get on foil, but wont allow you to get too high, limiting the risk of a bad fall. EARLY PROGRESSION: After one session on the Starboard I quickly moved on to the Suns 6'6 131L with an Axis 75cm 19mm Mast and Axis S Series 1020 Front Wing + 440 Tail. Sill, a very large board but a much better size to learn on. I spent another couple of sessions down at the beach, flat water foiling and getting use to moving my weight around, eventually gaining confidence on my feet! I then started to head out with our local crew to a reef break. This meant that I could sit off the the side of the surf watching and practicing my take-off timing, still flat water foiling. Just 6 sessions in and I caught my first wave! It wasn't glamorous, and didn't last long but I was up and moving! Once you're on a wave, be sure to push the nose down the wave, otherwise you'll go flying off the face of it! From here on, I have had the luxury of being able to chop and change wings quite often as there are 6 of us here at Foil Drive, all riding Axis and all at different technical levels. My progression may not have been in the perfect order, but it did help me understand how a wing can change your ride so much! * I moved to an Assist PLUS instead of a prototype at this time too * After that first wave, I was totally hooked! I kept my pod down low and continued to play around on the small lumps allowing me to slowly work out where I need my feet, and when to shift my weight. My first two rides were on the prototype Foil Drive - image right is one of my early waves with the Assist, I'm generally behind the camera so that's a rare shot! Tips for moving into swell and small rolling waves: - Be confident with your flat water foiling and have your safe dismount down pat. Fall with the board, away from the mast region! Don't try and save it, just take the safe spill and try again. - Find some mates to head out with, they don't have to be foilers, it just makes it more fun. (but they probably will be soon) If not, get chatting to some of the crew at your local line up. Most people are more than happy to give you some tips and have a chat! - Slip, slop, slap! For you non Aussies... sunscreen, always (Watch this)! Unless you're one of those crazies trying to avoid icebergs when you're out foiling! - Stick to a setup you're confident on and don't change it up too soon or too often. - Start by sitting off to the side of the surf or out the back and watch the swell and where it breaks, if you're around other foilers, take note of when and where they take off and how they shift their weight once on the wave. - Slowly start to take off on the small lumps that form to the side of the larger waves (reef break) or the small rollers in between sets. - Be respectful of other surfers, but don't be put off. Familiarise yourself with surf etiquette (there's so much content on this online but check this out) but also understand you're out there to learn. For a while I felt like I was "wasting waves" or getting in the way when it was my turn. Just because you might not be utilising the full wave, if it's your turn, jump in there! Others won't mind and most people are stoked to see you giving it a go! - Watch out for your board! When you feel uncomfortable or unstable, jump away from your board (ideally on the opposite side to the mast). I always place my hands on my head and turn into a small ball. This protects your head and chest from any impact that may occur. It's a great idea to catch waves by yourself when you're starting out, that way when you fall, there's no change of your board flying and hitting someone nearby (Even with a leggy on, these things FLY!) - If you fall, head to the sides. You don't want to be caught out in the white water so jump on your belly and boost to the side. If you do get caught, don't stress about your board, the leg rope will take care of that, just make sure you dive into the oncoming wave before your board so it doesn't come flying at you! - Practice turning, you'll soon work out if you're more comfortable turning toe side or heel side. - Initially I found it easiest to efoil around, then peel onto a wave at the right time rather than standing still and working out when the right time to take off was. TIME TO UPGRADE So our local surf spot has a very, very long steep hill from the carpark to the beach. There's not really a good way to carry a foil board so by my 7th session I'd downsized to the board I'm now on all the time with the Assist PLUS, the Quatro Wing Drifter 6'0 130L with an Axis 75cm 19mm Mast + Axis BSC 1120 Front Wing (Not attached to mast - Image below) + 440 Tail. The lighter board was so much easier to carry and made me more excited to head out for a foil, it's still a mission getting back to the car, but worth it at least! I found the smaller board so much easier to turn on and control, making catching a wave much easier. I progressed to the Axis S 1000 Front Wing and this has become my go to for now. I really appreciate having quite a thick nose, I find the extra volume at the front helps with stability. When catching that first wave, you learn pretty quick that if you don't adjust your weight... you'll go flying! As you feel the wave start to take you, push down on the nose a little more and ride across the wave. If you're going too fast and outrunning the wave, turn left or right and it'll catch up again. With the Foil Drive motor down low, you'll find it easier to have it engaged the whole time you're on foil. If you disengage there will be a fair bit of drag to get used to, having it engaged may cause you to go too fast though. You'll work it out! Once you've made it to the end of your wave if you're able to efoil with your gear you can peel off and flat water foil back to the line up or pump back out there! Tips for riding waves - Try foiling around then peeling into the wave rather than timing your take off. - Nose down once you're on the wave! - Turn left or right if you're going to fast and leaving the wave behind. - Ease off the throttle at the end of your ride, don't suddenly stop. - When you think you're at a comfortable height above the water, try go a little higher. It'll feel strange but more than likely, what feels like a mile above the water is only a few cm's. A HOPEFUL BEGINNER By all means, I'm still a beginner... however, I do feel I'm no longer learning the ropes and have them firmly in my hands. I don't feel as though I need someone holding my hand anymore, I still do appreciate and love the feedback from the crew and will always be learning. I'm really confident on my board now and and starting to consider a slightly smaller board. I'd love to prone one day as I'm still dreading having a paddle in hand! I've experimented with a few different wings like the Axis PNG 1150 (Image Left) and Axis HPS 1050 (Image Centre), I didn't notice a huge amount of change with these two when flat water foiling so have stuck with the Axis S 1000 (Image Right). Over summer we've spent a bit of time testing the Assist PLUS and I've had the opportunity to try some other boards. Ben rides the smaller Quatro Wing Drifter 5'4 90L. I took it for a test run with an Axis 75cm 19mm Mast â„¢Axis HPS 1050 Front Wing + 440 Tail and managed to get up and going, but certainly noticed the smaller size and had to focus more on my take off technique to keep the box above the water for reception! I won't picture this one as it looks the same as the Quatro board above, just shorter. Efoiling around with the Assist PLUS on some different setups. I've also had a run with Paul's Konrad Sup Glidr 6'0 118L. Again flat water foiling with an Axis 75cm 19mm Mast and Axis ART 999 Front Wing + 400 Progressive Tail (Image Below). Now, in no way is the Art 999 a good choice for learning... but, after working out how much speed it needs, had a lot of fun trying to twisting and turn on flatware. As for the board, I found it much less stable side to side. The Konrad has a more rounded profile compared to the Quatro, so you notice every slight movement a lot more. I also found it harder to get going after the board makes any contact with the water but really is something I could now progress into if I wanted. This whole setup, I probably would never have tried this early on without a Foil Drive in hand. Being able to test the waters with a wing that's quite progressive makes me excited about what I may be able to do in the future, just watch out for those sharp edges! Tips for testing your skills - Give it a go! If you have the opportunity to learn, why not! You may surprise yourself and be more ready than you think you are. - What's right for me, may not be right for you. We all really love Axis gear here at Foil Drive and we all favour different boards. There's so many amazing foil brands out there so get chatting to a Foiling community (Our Foil Drive Owners Group is pretty great ;) ) and enjoy the process of progression! MOVING THE MOTOR UP THE MAST As I write this blog, I'm still coming off the high of foiling with my motor out of the water for the first time last weekend! I'd heard all about the pure feeling of foiling and now that I've experienced it... I won't be dropping my pod back down anytime soon! I kind of had a feeling when I knew I was ready to move out of "learner mode" and bump up my motor. A few sessions in a row, I kept out running waves and wanting to turn my motor off but not being able to because of it's positioning. I decided to commit the next session to being in the water 90% of the time, and to my surprise, it wasn't any harder! It took a minute to get use to the lack of motor sound and the extra speed the wave adds when the motor is out of the water, but it was great! I've since jumped into some bigger surf again and it didn't go so well and that's totally ok! It's and up and down journey (literally) and every session offers new things to learn. Tips for moving your motor - Don't go half way. I was contemplating moving my motor up just a tad and a mate of ours who also rides an Assist PLUS, and has foiled for years, advised to go straight to the top. He was so right, I went about 25cm's from the board, down my mast (a little lower than you usually would for most uses) and found the motor popped out the water at the perfect time with no thought about it. If the pod were to be mid way, I think you'd struggle to know when to pop the motor and when to apply power. - You'll need to account for more speed when the wave picks you up as the motor is no longer in the water and point your nose down the face of the wave, I learnt that one the hard way! - Expect to fall instantly the first few times purely because of the lack of sound. It kind of shocks you and you get so distracted by the lack of sound you'll ride right off the top of the wave! - Do it with a smile and you'll always be winning! I started foiling for the first time in September 2021, that's just 6 months ago, and we've been incredibly busy here so I've had about a dozen session in total! With no prior knowledge, some tips here and there from the crew and a keen heart, I'm really proud of my progress so far. I'm not in a position yet to recommend boards or wings as I'm still wrapping my head around it all, but I hope my story so far might be encouraging for you and maybe even a little helpful. As a team, we'll be writing a separate blog explaining what different type of wings offer and how to select wing combos for different purposes. I'm looking forward to more waves, more often and, maybe, even adding a paddle to my setup... baby steps! I'd love to hear your journey of learning to foil, so please share in the comments and if you have any tips and tricks yourself, add them below! Happy foiling, Caitlyn March 2022

Monmouth County, NJ, USA Tell us a little bit about yourself, how long have you been foiling and where are you from?  I started foiling in September of 2022.  Surfing is super popular where I am from and after surfing for a long time I wanted to try something new.  Since trying and progressing it is all I do in the ocean. What sparked your interest in Foil Drive?  We get a lot of wind and 95 percent beach breaks. So when its windy Foildrive allows me to go up wind instead of walk back up the beach and stay away from populated surf zones in my area.  I also really did not connect with learning to wing and DW.  The Foil Drive allows me to be in the same conditions with less equipment. What was the learning curve like with Foil Drive?  Honestly I didn’t really have a learning curve.  I was originally taught to foil with an e-foil so the Foil Drive has that same feel but with the ability to also use the foil when you want.  Within my first day I was in the ocean flat water starting.  I will say that I started with a 48 liter board and at my height and weight that’s enough liters but I quickly started to decrease the size of the board. What is your go to Foil Drive setup and why? Foil Drive gear, board and foils:  I am on the Max Power with a KT Drifter 4 in 34 liters and on a Unifoil Progression 140 set up. 75 mast short fuse and the 14 neutral tail.  I have landed on that gear because it’s easy and versatile in all conditions.  The board is on the wider side so flat water starts easy, the wing is very surfy but also really floaty so it doesn’t take much to get it going.  All in all if I want to just practice pumping in the bay or go surf some lumps in the ocean I feel confident in my equipment. Tell us about which type of foiling you’re most in to, what’s a standard session out foiling for you? I am a prone guy,  I really enjoy carving around and playing in the surf.  With FD I plan on doing some DW sessions on my prone board as well. But I use FD currently just for the surf.  It keeps me out of the lineup and gives me powder vibes. What is your next adventure with your Foil Drive? I can’t wait to take it about 4 hours north of my current state (you can figure it out). There are endless point breaks and opportunity for ocean swell with limitless opportunity. Who would you think would benefit the most from having a Foil Drive? Honestly the cool thing about FD is I do believe it is for anyone.  A full on first timer can feel comfortable especially with the recent development of the prop guard.  The beginner person in ANY discipline can use it as a tool to have a better success rate.  Wingers can light wind easier, DW guys can go in lighter wind and get used to their board.  But even today’s pros are smiling ear to ear because of the results of Foil Drive.  I mean I don’t think Paul Cooper has taken his off yet haha.    Surf Foiling (Medium Conditions) Medium conditions for me are 1-3 and when I'm foildriving I use Max Power foil drive system/battery with 6 inch  motor. I rider my Unifoil progression 140 foils with Omen Large Ahi stab and 75 mast with the 4’8 Drfter 4 Carbon board by KT. Depending on swell power I might add a bit of a positive tail shim. Surf Foiling (Large Conditions) Large conditions for me are 4-6 and when I'm foildriving I use Max Power foil drive system/battery with 6 inch  motor. I rider my Unifoil progression 140 foils with Omen Small Ahi stab and 75 mast with the 4’8 Drfter 4 Carbon board by KT. Depending on swell power I might add a bit of a negative tail shim. Tell us a little bit about yourself, how long have you been foiling and where are you from?  Mathew Mckinnon, born in South Australia and moved to Coffs Harbour Northern NSW early 2000s, grew up on the beach and surfed most weeks as a kid. I now live in a small town called Sandy Beach. What sparked your interest in Foil Drive? It was actually James Casey, a few years ago I had a one on one prone lesson with James in small surf conditions, we had a conversion after the session and he mentioned a product called “Foil Drive," the waves that day were hard to paddle into as it was too small and that started the conversation about Foil Drive and what it can do to allow you to get up regardless of the conditions. What was the learning curve like with Foil Drive?  I started on a efoil after receiving a complementary efoil lesson as a gift from my sister in law, so for me going from a heavy efoil down to a prone foil with a Foil Drive was the next progression in my foil journey, I was blown away by the lightness underfoot and was hooked after the first session out in the surf. What is your go to Foil Drive setup and why, and what’s your weight?  Definitely the MAX paired with the MAX Sport battery, 15cm Mast Location, 3 Blade Prop for that extra grip! [product-carousel] Tell us about which type of foiling you’re most in to, what’s a standard session out foiling for you?  I am a Surf Foiler, always checking the swell and wind for the ultimate surf session!! Not into downwinding yet so my day to day addictions is all about the ultimate wave! What is your next adventure with your Foil Drive?  Hoping to join the foil drive team and head to Hood river, would be amazing to meet all the industry legends and suppliers that make all these amazing foil toys. Who would you think would benefit the most from having a Foil Drive? To be honest I think ALL foilers regardless of experience could benefit from a Foil Drive set up in the garage, perfect for those flat days on the coast or the days when you might need a push out on the open sea downwinding. Clearly it helps beginners to get a feel of getting on foil and the assisted advantage of getting the extra power to get on the waves earlier.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, how long have you been foiling and where are you from? My name is Julia Castro, I was born in Fuerteventura, Spain. I am a professional Waterwoman, I used to be a professional kitesurfer but then became an all-around watersports addict. I have also did some years competing in the cable wakeboard side of the world, tried some wingfoil comps along the way and now I am currently working on a big video project and sharing the stoke! I started foiling in the Philippines in 2017 and have not stopped ever since. What sparked your interest in Foil Drive? Upon the introduction to Foil Drive by a dear friend, I found myself captivated by the product's allure even before experiencing it first-hand. My longstanding commitment to indulging in various water sports has always been driven by my desire to savor every moment in the water. Foil Drive, however, seemed like the key toy I needed to amplify my passion to immerse myself further and relish the optimal conditions to the fullest. Mission accomplished. What was the learning curve like with Foil Drive? I have to admit, had a perfect day for learning, no wind and flatwater, and the best teacher possible, Dominic. it took me not more than 10 minutes to be foiling around, and after that time I already tried going on some small waves, way easier than I thought. Mega stoked!   Tell us about which type of foiling you’re most in to, what’s a standard session out foiling for you? I just love foiling, I mainly kite and wingfoil, and now thanks to Foil Drive I go on waves without a wing or a kite. There's no standard day for me on the water. Forecast changes quite a bit here in Fuerteventura so, every day is a new day and every day there's a toy for the occasion. I feel really lucky to be able to do so many sports and enjoy different conditions.  What is your next adventure with your Foil Drive? I am producing a big video/documentary I hope I will be able to show you before the end of the year. It's a video that talks about being born on an island, recycling, adventures... Can't tell you more but I can't wait to show you the final product! Who would you think would benefit the most from having a Foil Drive? Honestly, If you like foiling (or even if you haven't tried it yet, it is such a great product for everyone... But to narrow it up I'd say: Whoever that  A) Does not want to buy a jet ski B) Whoever loves spending time on the water C) Whoever loves foiling Follow Julia: 📸 @Fuertejulia 👤 Facebook 📺 YouTube 👔 Linked In

Tell us a little bit about yourself, how long have you been foiling and where are you from? James Casey, from Sydney's Northern Beaches and I've been foiling since 2016. I have competed internationally in SUP and Surf events, but foiling is the focus now. My day job is coaching foiling and I am a part owner in Code Foils. What sparked your interest in Foil Drive? The ability to coach people on flat water and then take them into waves in a safe environment was the original interest but the benefit for teaching people downwind foiling has become an even bigger benefit! What was the learning curve like with Foil Drive? For the most part I really enjoyed it. playing around with pod height was the biggest breakthrough for me. As I could already foil having the pod up nice and high (15-12cm) created the most enjoyment for me. For coaching closer to mid mast (or 20-25cm) created the best balance of e foiling and free foiling.  What is your go to Foil Drive setup and why, and what’s your weight? I'm 83kg and my go to is the 4'8 carver with the Code Foils 980S with the Gen 2 Slim Endurance Battery and 12cm cable. For me it allows me to get up easily, pump around between waves, e foil out to different spots if I need to and surf foil freely when on the waves. Tell us about which type of foiling you’re most in to, what’s a standard session out foiling for you? Downwind Foiling gets the most of my foiling focus. Using the Foil Drive to motor up wind and turn around when I have a short time window for a downwinder is awesome, a truly liberating experience! What is your next adventure with your Foil Drive? Probably an upwind to downwinder or teaching with it for a beginner foil lesson. Who would you think would benefit the most from having a Foil Drive? Those looking to get into downwind foiling, takes out the pain in learning to paddle up so you skip straight to the fun bit.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, how long have you been foiling and where are you from? I've been playing in nature since I was a kid. I grew up in the French Alps and did lots of outdoor sports, skiing, snowboarding, mountain bike, climbing... Windsurfing was my first watersport. The connection with the water had a special effect on me. Through the years, I decided to dedicate my life to it. I started SUP and then foiled in the early days of the sport. It's every time such an incredible thing to be part of the birth of a sport community. I feel super lucky to be alive with this strong passion and I couldn't imagine my life without it. I also love to share this passion with others. What sparked your interest in Foil Drive? I immediately imagined myself with the Foil Drive surfing big mellow waves I couldn't paddle in with a regular SUP or prone foil board! I have to say James Casey made me dream about it!  What was the learning curve like with Foil Drive? Using the Foil Drive for the first time is not as easy as it looks. It's a specific technique and it needs a bit of time to get it. My first session was basically about swimming and watching Dominic Hoskyns turning around me!! Ahah! I had the chance to learn it with Dominic and his tips and watching him Foil Driving was a big help. The third session we went surfing consistent swell! It blew my mind!! What is your go to Foil Drive setup and why, and what’s your weight? My favourite set up is the Gen2 Assist Max on my Axis Pump board 4'6 37l, 82 carbon mast and 780 Spitfire. I'm 67kg or 147Lbs.   Tell us about which type of foiling you’re most in to, what’s a standard session out foiling for you? My favorite session with the Foil Drive is catching overhead mellow long waves on my local foiling spot. What is your next adventure with your Foil Drive? My next adventure with the Foil Drive will be to surf as long as possible beach breaks downwind along the coast! Who would you think would benefit the most from having a Foil Drive? The Foil Drive is a game changer to learn SUP Downwind foil and to improve your surfing skills. It makes you improve so much faster enjoying a large panel of conditions.     Olivia’s Foiling Achievements  3 x SUP Racing World Champion (2018, distance race ISA | China), (2019, sprint and technical race ICF | China) 1 x GWA Wingfoil Racing Champion (2021) 1 x Winner of the M20 Sup Foiling (2023)   Photos by Benjamin Borez.   Follow Olivia📸 @oliviapiana 📺 YouTube

Tell us a little bit about yourself, how long have you been foiling and where are you from? Being born on the Gold Coast in Queensland. I’ve always loved the ocean and my parents joined me up into the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club when I was only 4. Surfing and waterskiing are second nature to me and in later years I moved onto the snow fields and started riding the very first Sims snowboards in 1982. I first foiled behind a boat on a Rush Randel foil board with snowboard boots way back in 2005 with Dale Chapman but that didn’t last too long as it was incredibly hard and dangerous. It wasn’t until 2016 when I was learning to kite surf I picked up a Cabrinha Double kite foil board that I started foiling full on. The following year after I saw Kai Lenny foiling on a cut down 14 foot Sup in Hawaii, I said to myself "that’s me." Unfortunately no SUP foil boards were available in Australia so I gaffer taped my Cabrhina kite foil board and foil to my JP 8-6 Sup. This was actually the first Sup foil board in Australia and the rest is history. This is the video of that day:  I never looked back from that day chopping and modifying any foil system to achieve my goal to free foil in the ocean and that was also the birth of the Ron Pirios chop shop. What sparked your interest in Foil Drive? My primary love of foiling is the prone, but with a background of professional water sports my shoulders have taken a beating. I had my second shoulder reconstruction mid to late last year and on top of that just as it was almost healed I went tow foiling and broke my hand. All this happened just prior to the release of the Gen 2. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on one of the early releases and I was out foiling again with a waterproof cast on my hand. Now that I’m healed I just can’t get off the Foil Drive, I just love it and my froth metre is at 10. It’s like towing and proning all in one, I call it power proning, it’s just sick.  What was the learning curve like with Foil Drive?  My learning curve was pretty fast as I had good efoil background but the Foil Drive Gen 2 is an amazingly easy rig to ride, however just like proning you never stop improving. What is your go to Foil Drive setup and why, and what’s your weight? I pretty well just ride one board for proning, downwinding & wake thieving. It’s my DC 5-5 x 20 x 55 litre purpose built prone board. For my 88 kg this board is just amazing. Incredible hull speed lets me flat water start no paddling front wing down to around the 800cm2 mark. I just love this board surfs great and just do easy to start and ride, it also extends battery life rather than struggling on shorter low volume boards. Tell us about which type of foiling you’re most in to, what’s a standard session out foiling for you? I’m only just now getting back into paddle proning again BUT have to say it’s not my No.1 anymore (LOL). I love Downwinding but since I’ve joined the Foil Drive club my SUP has been retired and I just Downwind now on the Foil Drive and Wingding which I still really love, I don’t use the Foil Drive on my wing I’m pretty good at low wind starts without it. Session times vary but when I prone I have 2 max battery’s and a sport plus I have a charger in my car which will recharge both my Max’s so my Foil Drive prone sessions are generally 2 to 4 hours. What is your next adventure with your Foil Drive? I have a good school mate who owns the Fiji Beachouse on the coral coast . I’m back there this April May for 3 weeks and will be introducing the Foil Drive to the Fijian crew. Also be looking at shooting my 3rd movie. “Living The Stoke 3 Foil Drive Fiji“ Who would you think would benefit the most from having a Foil Drive? The Foil Drive is for everyone and especially old salts like me who have the passion for the ocean but not the knees or shoulders to scratch around trying to catch waves. This truely is greatest surfing advancement on the market today. It’s taken my prone sessions from 6 waves to 60 waves a session. Whether you are on a Prone, Sup or wingding the Foil Drive will take you to another surfing dimension. My one piece of advice when you order a Foil Drive is get an extra battery, you simply don’t fatigue like you normally do so you will last twice as long , which means you will want an extra battery.  Check out the Rob Pirios Podcast Episode Foil Drive Podcast | Ep 07 | Rob Pirios | Foil Drive Team Rider Follow Rob 📸 @rob.vonpiros   📺 YouTube

Tell us a little bit about yourself, how long have you been foiling and where are you from? I’m a longtime surfer originally from Belgium and currently in Siargao, Philippines. I started foiling in June 2018 and it wasn’t love at first site :)  After a little break I went full time around march 2019 and I’ve been hooked ever since. Overall I love all ocean watersports and it’s amazing foiling can be practiced in all disciplines as surfing and kiting and now also wing foiling and downwinding (and foil driving !!) What sparked your interest in Foil Drive? It was David De Vries that showed me the first assist system back in 2020. He was taking so many waves on his sup and loved it. I tried as well and understood this was an interesting tool. Back then I thought I’d only use it for sup, or at a later time in life. With the assist plus and it’s more powerful capabilities, I got interested again also using it for coaching and e-foiling. Once we got the units in Belgium, it became clear this was going to become more than what we expected and we couldn’t take it off our boards anymore! What was the learning curve like with Foil Drive? It felt very natural to me. Watching Dominiks YouTubes and his explanations made total sense. That being said I had been e-foiling a bunch before and get around well regular foiling. I first learned how to get up in very small conditions and then use the ollie to get pumping. After that I did a couple of light wind winging tests and taught a couple of friends how to e-foil. Once I got to Siargao, it made total sense to tackle some bigger swells, and get assisted into waves that otherwise would be hard to catch or get to normally. Then when the Gen 2 arrived, it blew my mind with its again more powerful capabilities and the ease of setup and use. What is your go to Foil Drive setup and why, and what’s your weight? I’m using the Gen 2 assist max 15cm power battery on a 50 liter midlenght appletree skipper. On the 27liter it worked perfectly as well. For surf I’m on the sk850 and for bigger waves and downwind I use the sk8 550 and eagle 790 from F-One Tell us about which type of foiling you’re most in to, what’s a standard session out foiling for you? There has been episodes! I started prone foiling as much as possible, winging when its windy and recently I really enjoy sup foiling when its small and if there is proper downwinding, ill take this as well. With the foil drive ill go out to places where it’s exposed and bigger waves pass through. It’s amazing not having to take any boat to get to the spot, take a couple waves, and make my way back to shore e-foiling, no problem. What is your next adventure with your Foil Drive? I’ll go around the Philippines and explore challenging conditions where it’s big and not great for regular surfing. Foildrive is massively widening the conditions we can think of and ride! Who would you think would benefit the most from having a Foil Drive Everyone, it’s actually interesting some of my friends would like to try that aren’t surfers and I believe you can get them into the basics of e-foiling pretty easy in flat water and then transition into small uncrowded surf (still need to try this). It’s a great tool for coaching all levels and really anyone can benefit from being assisted in any foiling discipline.   I’m based in the southeast of the Philippines on the island of Siargao, which is the mecca for surfing in the country. It’s known for its world-class wave named Cloud 9. I used to shortboard the wave a lot until I discovered foiling. Now, I actually miss out on some people I used to encounter there. But the foiling in the area is so good! There is a wide variety of spots around that work with all kinds of swell and wind directions, and we get wind also to go wingfoil and kite. Some spots are world-class wingfoil waveriding, I’d say. But you have to embrace the conditions as they are presented. It’s never consistent, and it can change very rapidly. Now that I have the foildrive on the island, it opens up so many more possibilities, and I’m able to face those challenging conditions better, in performance and in safety. For me, I love to explore the spots that are too hard to master as takeoffs are too steep or the waves travel too fast. Also, for downwinding, it’s challenging without an assist, as there are heavy currents and open ocean around. We will explore more of that in the months to come. In this video, I’m riding an open ocean big wave spot I’ve been looking at for some time. On the Sup without an assist, it’s somehow possible, but I really enjoyed being able to launch myself into the sets on my 27-liter prone board with the foildrive. It’s so fast and challenging, and I felt very safe having the drive as an assist. Lucky to have my buddy Guy Vanryckeghem there to capture it on the FPV drone and be able to show this to the foiling community! Gear I’m riding: Appletree surfboard Pro Foil V2 27 liters F-One sk8 850, 85cm Alu Mast Motor Pod at 20cm You’ll see in the video I’m still on the assist plus. The box is mounted next to my front foot for a minimum weight effect on the smaller board. It limits you in prone paddling, but you honestly don’t need it as the drive can navigate you to where you need to be for take-off. That being said, my gen2 is on the way, as obviously it will perform much better, but the assist plus still gets the job done very much as well 🙏. Follow Tom: 📸 @siargao_foiler  📺 YouTube

Jack Paterson - Foil Drive Team Rider

Hi my name is Jack, I am 16 years old from Newcastle Australia! I started foiling and fell in love with the sport 3 years ago. My journey started with no surfing background or nothing to do with boards. A friend gave me a setup to borrow and I haven't looked back since that day. Now I am into all disciplines of the sport prone, wing, downwind, I love it all and having a Foil Drive at hand really helped me open up so many more doors to get into the many disciplines of the sport!  Jack rides for the local shop and Foil Drive dealer, Kite and Sup. He rides an F-One Foil and a custom prone board with an integrated Assist Plus inside the board. Jack's Instagram

The Foil Lord himself! Dave West is a Prone and Downwind foil shredder from the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia. Personally I feel like Dave kinda burst onto the foiling scene pretty quicky with his very raw, honest and straight talking reviews, tutorials and rapidly progressing riding. His Youtube video style is very "everyday guy likes foiling and wants to help you learn and like it too" kinda vibe...You can see a huge range of Foildriving videos from Dave on his YouTube Playlist here! Dave can rip on a Foil Drive Prone board setup in the waves! At his home break in the Sunny Coast   Dave's first visit down to Foil Drive HQ in Adelaide, Australia. While his first FD powered Downwinder didn't quite go to plan, it could have been a lot, lot worse!   Struggle street  The video that he is very well known for and the one I finally went "ok enough's enough, lets chat with this guy" was his raw and quite brutally honest thoughts on learning to down wind foil.    Check out Dave's Content on Instagram and Youtube 📺 YouTube 📸 Instagram
