Learning

Learn faster, unlock any discipline, and progress on a system you will never outgrow.

THE EASIEST WAY TO FOIL

Learning to foil is easier than people expect. On the first session it feels new and unfamiliar, but once it clicks, the progression is similar to riding a bike - that “aha” moment comes, and from that point on, you never lose it.

The challenge for most beginners is not the flying itself, but finding enough consistent speed to provide stable lift and shifting weight to find balance. For those learning behind a boat, jetski, or winging, there are so many other factors like driver skills, rope tension, chop, and conditions which add a whole extra layer of multitasking, which is the last thing you want when discovering or progressing in a new sport.

The fastest, calmest way to learn foiling, and a system that grows with you.

Foil Drive smooths out the entire learning curve. As the lightest universal hybrid assist and eFoil system in the industry, it gives beginners steady, predictable power that makes early sessions calm, controlled, and repeatable. Instead of waiting for waves, relying on wind, or being towed by someone else, riders can stand up at their own pace, practice straight-line flights, build muscle memory, and reset instantly after falls.

Unlike traditional unadjustable eFoils, which are bulky, heavy and quickly outgrown, Foil Drive grows with you. The same kit that teaches your very first flights in flatwater becomes your progression tool for surf, downwind, wing, wake, and pumping. As skills improve, you simply use less assist until you’re purely gliding, leaving the magical flow state that makes flying over the water so addictive.

Foil Drive also unlocks multiple disciplines without requiring new boards, bigger wings, or discipline-specific gear. Riders can use their existing setups for surf, wing, downwind, wake, and flatwater, relying on the assist to bridge skill gaps, reduce gear costs, and extend the usable range of nearly any foil or board they already own. Instead of buying entire quivers to match conditions, just one Foil Drive set up can help you progress across every pathway in foiling using the gear you already have.

With universal compatibility across prone boards, mid-lengths, SUPs, wingboards, and inflatables, Foil Drive lets you learn on comfortable, stable gear, then move the same system onto smaller, high-performance setups as your skills build. It is a long term investment in maximizing your foiling journey, not a stepping stone you will outgrow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Foil Drive suitable for complete beginners?

Yes. Foil Drive is designed to make learning foiling significantly easier for beginners. The assist provides smooth, predictable power that helps riders reach stable lift without relying on perfect waves, wind, or towing. This allows new riders to focus on balance, stance, and control rather than struggling to generate speed.

Do I need prior foiling or board sports experience?

No prior foiling experience is required. While experience in board sports can help, Foil Drive allows first-time foilers to learn at their own pace, using stable equipment and calm conditions to build confidence and muscle memory quickly.

How is Foil Drive different from a traditional eFoil?

Unlike traditional eFoils, Foil Drive is lightweight, modular, and adjustable. It integrates with your existing foil gear instead of replacing it with a large, dedicated board. As your skills progress, you simply reduce the assist until you’re riding unpowered, making it a system you won’t outgrow.

Will I outgrow Foil Drive as I improve?

No. Foil Drive is built to progress with you. The same setup that helps with your first flatwater flights can later be used for surf foiling, winging, downwind runs, wake foiling, and pumping. As you improve, you use less assist rather than replacing your gear.

Can I use Foil Drive with my existing board and foil?

Yes. Foil Drive is universally compatible with a wide range of boards and foils, including prone boards, mid-lengths, SUPs, wing boards, and inflatables. This lets you learn on stable gear you’re comfortable with and transition to higher-performance setups over time.

Recommended by Guenther Oka

Foil Drive ambassador and Guenther Oka's ideal setup for learning to E-foil with is:

  • Foil Drive Fusion or Assist MAX
  • Fusion 860 Battery or MAX power
  • High Power Motor
  • 3 Blade Propellers
  • Cable Height: The shorter cable you go, the less mast you have to e-foil / carve around on, but the easier it is to start. The longer cable you go, the more mast you have to e-foil / carve around, but the foil wants to rise more and the more difficult it can be. For a true e-foil experience I recommend the 60cm cable for 73cm masts and 70cm cable for 83cm masts. However the 25cm cable can offer a friendly entry level experience.
  • Recommended board: Something with a lot of volume and that is wide under the chest. Think 50 liters and more with a width of 20cm. This creates a lot of float and a stable platform to pop up on.
  • Recommended foil: Something low aspect (aspect ratio of 4-5) with a big surface area (1200-1600 sq cm) that will generate lift at slow speeds.

Quick tip:

Always keep the nose of the board just barely breaking the surface of the water. Arch your back to help keep the board level. Get your front knee on the board and slowly stand up from there.

Recommended by Dave West

Foil Drive ambassador and Dave West's ideal setup is learning to E-foil is:

  • Cable Height: Start with the 60cm and grab a 15cm when you start to progress.
  • Recommended board: 5ft - 6ft Depending on weight. Size your board more around it's length rather than it's volume. I.e 6ft for 100kg rider.
  • Recommended foil: Around 900-1100 sqm & aspect ratio between 8-9 is ideal for an all round foil that you can grow into. 1130s from Code is a great example.

Quick tip:

Always keep the nose of the board just barely breaking the surface of the water. Arch your back to help keep the board level. Get your front knee on the board and slowly stand up from there.

Recommended by James Casey

Foil Drive ambassador and James Casey's ideal setup for learning to downwind is:

Quick tip:

Have a light, medium and strong wind foil to ensure you match the conditions. For example, a light wind foil for someone my weight (83kg) is a 1250R, a medium wind foil is an 860R and a strong wind foil is a 680R. That
way you can adjust your foil to match the conditions better. If you want to get deep into what justifies a light, medium or strong wind foil join the Coach Casey Club or have a play around with the wave generation calculator using this link and apply it to your local run.

Recomended by Josh Ku

Foil Drive ambassador and Josh Ku's ideal setup for learning to downwind is:

Use the foil drive to get up and then don't rely on the motor. (Dont keep the finger on the trigger) Connect the bumps and swell, try stay high on the mast and pump
